This is for both Android and iOS Whatsapp users. Therefore You can format your texts with italics, strikethrough, and Bold in Whatsapp. Typing special characters before and after the text in your message will then format your texts. The use of these special characters is known as markdown. You can also turn the regular font into a monospaced font with the right syntax. Following are the instructions for it:

  • Type an underscore ( _ ) especially on both sides of a word or phrase which will then make it italic Whatsapp. Example: _abcd_ would end up as abcd .And That’s how you can convert normal words into italics in Whatsapp.
  • Place an asterisk ( * ) on both sides of a word or phrase which will then make it bold in Whatsapp. Example: *abcd* would end up as abcd.
  • And if you want to cross out the text then type a tilde ( ~ ) especially on both sides of a word or phrase. This is the way to use strikethrough in Whatsapp. Example: ~abcd~ would then add a strikethrough to it.
  • Place three grave accents, ie backquotes or backticks ( “` ) especially on both sides of a word and phrase to use the monospace font. Example “`abcd“` would then show up in the new font.

WhatsApp displays a live preview of text attributes as you type. So you can see precisely how messages will show up in their formatted state when sent. And you can also combine italics, bold, and strikethroughs in Whatsapp. But applying monospace to any other formatted text will cancel it out. Since monospace removes all formatting when the font changes.
