For those who have deleted chats unintentionally, there is a possibility that the chat was current in your cloud backup.  Let us say your Google Drive or iCloud backup happened at midnight and in the morning you accidentally deleted a conversation.  The cloud backup still has the conversation and you’ll be able to restore it.

  • Uninstall WhatsApp from your own Android smartphone or iPhone.
  • Reinstall WhatsApp and set it up along with your telephone number.
  • When the program is set up, you’ll find a prompt asking you to restore messages from a cloud backup.   Tap Restore.

This may bring back the messages you had inadvertently deleted.  Be aware that if you have a message following your latest cloud backup and deleted it, then there is no way to regain it.

This method doesn’t work on iOS.

  • Proceed to your phone’s File Manager (download Google’s Files app if you can not find this program).  Now visit the WhatsApp folder > Database.  The Database folder contains all of the WhatsApp backup files which are stored locally on your phone.
  •  db.crypt12.  This is your latest backup file and you will need to rename it in order to keep it from being uninstalled.
  • Today you will see a whole lot of files in this folder in the arrangement msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1. db.crypt12.  These are your old WhatsApp backups, you can select the latest one and rename it to msgstore.db.crypt12.
  • Here is the tricky part: you will need to open Google Drive onto your smartphone, tap on the hamburger icon (the 3 vertical lines) > Backups.
  •  Set it up and once finished, you’ll find a prompt to restore chats from a local backup, considering you do not have a conversation backup on the cloud.
  • Tap on restore deleted WhatsApp and that is it.  You will get your deleted chats back.

These are the two methods that you may use in a situation, where you have accidentally deleted your WhatsApp chats or in a situation where you have installed WhatsApp and need your old chats back.  In any event, as we mentioned previously, you want to have the conversation backup option turned on so as to restore any messages.
